10 Things to Know About The NYC Mayoral Election

  1. The election was held on November 4th, 2025.

  2. The current mayor of the city, Eric Adams initially chose to run as an independent, before suspending his re-election campaign in September.

  3. The nominee for the Democratic Party was Zohran Mamdani, a current member of the State Assembly and a democratic socialist, who defeated former governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic Primary.

  4. After losing the Democratic Primary, Andrew Cuomo ran as an independent candidate. 

  5. The Republican nominee is Curtis Sliwa, who ran for mayor again after an unsuccessful bid in 2021.

  6. The major issues the election has been centered around have been affordability, public safety and climate change

  7. Endorsement from notable figures, super-PAC spending and cross-part appeal are playing crucial roles in the election

  8. Many view this election as a potential turning point for progressive urban governance in the US, giving Mamdani’s success in the campaign thus far.

  9. The winner of the election will have strong control of the city’s education system, being able to appoint the schools chancellor, control the budget of the Department of Education (DOE) and oversee much of the city’s public-school system. 

  10. The election is extremely high stakes: the policy for the nation’s largest school system, the city’s budget, policing strategy, public health, and climate policies are all at stake
