Student Council Co-Presidents Chase K. and Colin M. Aspire to “Leave a Legacy” that Community will Remember
Written by Ninis T. ‘28
Class Co-Presidents Chase K.’25 and Colin M.’25, elected by the student body in May 2024, are leading the school and advocating for students. Grytte reporter Ninis T. ’28 recently spoke with them about their visions for the school.
Speaking with Chase:
Q: What inspired you to run for student body president?
A: Me and Colin have both been at this school since kindergarten, this is our 13th year at this school. I have really loved Browning ever since I been here, and I thought that this would be a great way, by being president and by doing all I can, to give back to this school.
Q: What are your main goals for your term on the council
A: One of our main goals is, for the juniors, as they have such a stressful school year, to limit testing, assessments within 2, 3 days of their SAT and ACT dates, just to limit the stress there. We're also trying to improve school spirit, get more attendance at sports games, clubs, and things of that nature. Another one of our key goals is to make prom affordable to everyone.
Q: What are the top issues that students have brought to your attention?
A: One of the one of issues, that we're already working to resolve, is seniors and juniors having a free or multiple frees at the start of the day, but having to show up to homeroom. Whereas they'd rather have or be able to just come in for their 1st class. So right now, we're in the process of working on that. The decision isn't finalized yet, but we know we're gonna have some kind of thing where if you have a free first period, you won't have to come in for homeroom.
Q: What advice would you give to future students council candidates
A: I think if you truly love Browning, and that's why you're running for president, then do it. Just come up with a few good ideas and initiatives, make a good campaign. That was a big part of our running.
Q: What is one major initiative you hope to achieve by the end of your term?
A: I'd probably say just making this tight-knit community even more tighter knit. I hope to make everyone in the school closer to each other, and leave an impact that, you know, kids will remember for years after we're gone.
Q: What's the most rewarding part of your Browning career?
A: For me, I'd say, just seeing, my classmates grow around me. I've been in school with them, for the 13th year now. So seeing everyone else develop and grow has been great. Additionally, I'd add that, getting to build relationships with teachers, on levels deeper than just the classroom, as you know, on a personal level as well has been great and is another advantage of Browning being such a small school.
Speaking with Colin:
Q: What inspired you to run for student body president?
A: Like Chase, I wanted to reciprocate the love that Browning has given to me and to these past 13 years and give back to our community and Chase and I thought we can really represent our grade in the best way and provide everything that we could to help this community get better.
Q: What are your main goals for your term on the Council?
A: So we’re going to run year-long fundraisers to make sure that everyone can go to prom if they want to. And then I think Chase would agree with me on this, but, an overarching theme is just to leave a legacy at Browning, so people will remember us even once we're gone. To make a lasting impact.
Q: What challenges do you foresee during your term, and how do you plan to address them?
A: I guess one challenge that could arise is just, managing the level of power that we get, not being too optimistic and overconfident that we'll get so many things done, and just being realistic and feasible in what we could accomplish. Or I guess just being patient and bargaining. We're been talking with Mr. Willson and the higher-ups about, allowing juniors and seniors to come in late if they were free 1st period. And, we initially thought that they could just show up, you know, 5 minutes before school, but, we bargained and, now it's 30 minutes before second period. So we are just being realistic in what we can accomplish, but also trying our best to get what we want.
Q: How do you intend to handle disagreements within the student council or with the administration?
A: There's not always gonna be a consensus, and so just having healthy debates and arguments, with other council members and just deciding democratically, through a vote. and, taking the majority, I think that's a good way to manage disagreements.
Q: What is one major thing you hope to achieve by the end of your term?
A: I think, having everyone going to prom because I think that's a special time in our lives. And, as of now, it's very expensive and unaffordable. So I think that allowing everyone to go and have a good time without worrying about the cost is a great way. And that's one thing we want to accomplish. For me, I'd probably say just, I mean, just making this tight knit community even more tighter knit.
Q: What's the most rewarding part of your Browning career?
A: I think the most rewarding experience for me was, speaking at assembly at the beginning of the year. So I remember being a 1st grader seeing all the the big boys up there making speeches. I never thought that day would come for me, but it finally came. So that was a rewarding experience.
