Varsity Basketball Season Wrap-Up

Although not achieving the outcome they desired in their first year calling 64th Street home, the Browning Varsity Basketball team overcame many adversities and built a solid foundation for many years to come. The team, coached by Coach Pena and led by captains Jesse Small  ‘27 and Finn Yorke ‘26, looked to build upon the success the team had brought from the successful 2024-25 season. The year started off slow, losing a packed home opener against Riverdale, compiled with a season-ending injury sustained by starting forward Ben Hatfield ‘26 in the same game.

Despite the setbacks, the team responded with consecutive gritty wins over UNIS  and Lycée Français, showing early signs of what this group was capable of. Following those wins, the team faced another season-ending loss in sophomore Dennis Riley ‘28. Unfortunately, the middle stretch of the season was most difficult, marked by a blowout loss to Columbia prep and a nail-biter against Loyola (61-62). Despite these adversities, the team embodied a culture change defined by grit and perseverance with dominant wins over LREI (76-52), Lycée (53-30), and Churchill (61-20), finishing on a high note that pointed toward the potential this team holds.

The team’s resilience mattered more than any single result. The camaraderie and determination running through this team kept us competing hard through a tough schedule, and the lessons learned will carry forward.

Beyond the actual games, this season marked a new chapter for Browning Athletics. The 64th Street gym became a symbol of Panther pride, bringing forth a sense of Browning community with multiple packed games filled with parents, students, and alumni alike, showing support and sporting Browning colors. Near the end of the season, Browning celebrated its athletes by organizing a pep rally where students could cheer on their fellow athletes for all their hard work in the winter, followed by a full Saturday slate of matchups.

With a new home gym, a hungry returning roster, and a dedicated community that showed support all season long, the future seems extremely bright for the Browning Varsity Basketball team.
