After a last-minute comeback to win the league championship two years ago, the Varsity Basketball Panthers returned with an impressive victory at the LREI Tip-Off Tournament to start the season.

“It was a hard fought victory,” Alpha. C ‘24 said. “I am proud of the team’s performance and effort during the tournament.”

In the opening game, the Panthers won against Grace Church by 20 points, allowing just 8 points in the first half with their impressive defense that included a press.

In the championship game, they beat Bayridge Prep 83-73, seizing the championship title in a game that was fought until the last seconds. Matthew B. ‘23 dominated the game, scoring 34 points and winning the Most Valuable Player Award for the tournament.

“The energy was unmatched,” Jasper S. ‘22 said. “We didn’t have fans but our bench brought all of the noise. A great experience.”

The team's chemistry was unmatched, encouragement and positivity from all players led to flawless passes, scoring, and victory.

“It is a bigger commitment but you grow from it,” Benjamin H. ‘23 said, who is currently playing on his first varsity season.

New players on the varsity have adapted well to the challenging level of play. Only two players from two seasons ago remain: Jasper S. ‘22 and Matthew B. ‘23.

“It was great getting the season going,” Matthew B. ‘23 said. “Obviously the tournament isn’t the end goal, but I feel like we got off to a great start and hope to continue to be on top.”

The team hopes that they can keep their success stemming from the LREI Tournament and win the NYCAL Championship once again.
