Return to a Tradition: The College Trip

The Classes of 2023 and 2024 visit Yale University on October 4. The students also toured Fairfield University, the University of Connecticut, and Connecticut College.

With Covid-19 cases dropping, the Classes of 2023 and 2024 continued their annual college trip tradition and embarked on a three-day visit to various universities around the Northeast.

The juniors and seniors visited four schools, including Yale University, Fairfield University, the University of Connecticut, and Connecticut College. Sanford Pelz, Director of College Guidance, organized of the trip and selected the set of schools with the goal of offering students an array of different options.

Jack G. ‘24 went on the trip and was surprised by the colleges that the group visited. “Going into the trip, my expectations for Yale were high, as it is well-known. But Yale was not the school that caught my eye,” Jack said. “Fairfield stood out. Seeing a school so different from the place I have spent my whole life drew me to it, and I am glad I got to see a college that was not familiar to me.”

Additionally, the college trip helped previously overwhelmed students, like Emilio S. ‘24, gain new perspectives. “The college process is certainly stressful, and this trip made me realize that I prefer a more modern, smaller campus like Fairfield compared to a large one like Uconn,” Emilio said. “This discovery is largely thanks to Mr. Pelz for choosing a diverse set of schools.”

Students and faculty were unable to visit Vassar College and Sarah Lawrence College on the third and final day of the trip due to scheduling problems. Mr. Pelz salvaged the day by giving a talk as the students waited. Although the last day of the trip did not go as planned, the boys reflected on what they had experienced the previous two days.

As Covid continues to decline, the annual college trip tradition will continue its return to normalcy. While it was not an overnight trip, the boys were still able to take in important information and think about their future. As the Class of 2023 wraps up their college process, lessons from the trip helped guide their decisions.
