Newly-Elected Student Leaders on Vision for Next Year
Elected by the Upper School student body on May 13, 2022, Presidential Elect Ethan F. ’23 and Vice-Presidential Elect Rohan M. ’23 will be leading the school next year. The Grytte spoke with them about their prioritized initiatives, their experiences at Browning, and future collaboration with the administration.
Speaking with President Ethan F. ’23:
What initiatives will you prioritize? How will you accomplish this?
First and foremost, I want to continue to strengthen our community, especially in these times beginning to come out of Covid. School spirit is the backbone of this community, and I want to bring that back to Browning. Up until now, covid has forced us to put all of our usual fun school-wide activities on pause. As president I will focus on getting those activities back. Some examples are, biodiversity day, community day, and spirit weeks. Browning is special because of the relationships between grades. I remember being a 4th grade buddy, and it was one of my favorite parts about Browning. I will focus on creating new opportunities for upper school boys to interact with lower and middle school boys.
When did you know you wanted to be president? Was this a spontaneous decision or long thought out?
I’ve wanted to be Student Body President since I was in Middle school. I’ve always been interested in having a leadership role within the school. I want to enact positive change and do whatever I can to strengthen our community.
What are a student body president’s responsibilities? How will you live up to those duties?
The responsibilities of a student body president’s responsibilities are to be a leader, be the voice of the student body, be the bridge between the students and the faculty, and make out community fun and inclusive. Over the years at Browning, I have built relationships with not only the students, but with the faculty as well. This will allow me to successfully build that student to faculty bridge. Specifically, my close relationships with all of the upper school students will help build trust that a leader needs. The study body president would not be effective without the trust of the students. I am ready to step up to the plate and take on the responsibilities of the student body president.
Describe your experience at Browning. How do you intend on preserving/improving it for the next generations ?
Browning has been my home away from home for the past 13 years and I’ve loved every minute of it. The bonds I’ve built here with my friends will last a lifetime. The relationships I’ve built with the faculty have allowed me to thrive and grow outside of my comfort zone at school. My goal is to let the next generations of Browning build off what we already have and create an environment where the bonds we all build are stronger, and school spirit is brought back.
Speaking with Vice-President Rohan M. ’23:
How will you support Ethan? How do you envision your friendship helping the cause?
I will do my best to support Ethan as President by allowing him a perspective he can count on. Together, we will be able to generate effective and desired changes and use each other to make sure they can be achieved.
What do you bring to the table as VP?
I think my leadership qualities will allow me to be a successful Vice President. I believe that I am a good resource for my peers. I am also excited to be able to work with my peers both in and out of the council in order to bring change to the our school in a positive way.
How do you plan on working with the administration?
Over my years at Browning, I have formed many relationships with the faculty and will use what I have learned in that time to effectively communicate our concerns and ideas with the administration. The help we get from members of the faculty will be much appreciated and I look forward to their help and knowledge in the many ideas we look to explore.
Describe your experience at Browning. How do you intend on preserving/improving it for the next generation?
My Browning experience has been great. I have been able to learn in an environment that has taught me so much both in and out of the classroom. I hope to keep this feeling alive and allow it to grow for the next generation of Browning students. The changes we bring will hopefully make Browning an even better place.
