On September 26 and 27, the Freshmen and Peer Leaders, accompanied by Mr. Giordano, Ms. Lasala-Goettler, Ms. Geyer, and Mr. Anderson, headed to The Silver Lake Camp in Connecticut to kick off the year-long Peer Leadership program. This retreat was focused on helping freshmen build friendships and get a feel for what high school life at Browning is really like, with seniors stepping up as mentors.

The trip was filled with activities like soccer, raft building, and a high ropes course. Students challenged themselves—some were a bit nervous about balancing on ropes high off the ground or trying to build a raft with just a few supplies. Looking back, many said these experiences were fun and memorable moments that brought them closer together.

The retreat wasn’t just a one-off event; it was the start of lasting friendships between the ninth graders and their senior leaders. The Freshmen took this chance to bond, knowing they would be together for the next four years. These connections will continue to grow as they meet regularly for activities and discussions throughout the year.

The twelfth graders take on an extensive responsibility as peer leaders. They have to juggle their schoolwork while making time to connect with the freshmen. Even though it can be a lot of work, the rewards of being a role model and helping others make it worthwhile.

This retreat is a key part of the peer leadership program. It helps ninth graders transition into high school with someone there to guide them. Throughout the whole retreat, there was a vibe that made it easy for students to cheer each other on and tackle challenges together.

Overall, the peer leadership program is important for helping freshmen adjust to high school and for seniors to develop their leadership skills. In the end, this retreat was just the beginning. It set the stage for relationships that will keep growing throughout the year, making the peer leadership program an important part of the Browning experience. It fosters community, develops young leaders, and creates lasting connections.
