Spreading The Love : Sandwich making and Social Good with Browning Boys
Browning Riley’s Way In Action - Brody S. ‘27
On May 11th, members of the Riley’s Way chapter and Browning community at-large gathered in the commons and cafeteria to create sandwiches, a campaign launched in conjunction with the organization Grassroots Grocery. Long-term partners of the Browning community, Grassroots Grocery supported a new Browning effort to make a tangible impact in the crisis of food insecurity across Manhattan. Students would see their work going towards the community fridge operated by Grassroots at the NYCHA Holmes Tower, an essential public housing development serving primarily seniors in Upper Manhattan.
Beyond the sandwiches themselves, the event reflected a broader commitment among students to engage directly with the needs of the city around them. Throughout the afternoon, students and faculty worked side by side, transforming a shared space into one centered on service and collective action. In doing so, the initiative demonstrated how community engagement can extend beyond conversation and into meaningful, immediate impact.
Opportunities like these are crucial in realizing the opportunities for good lent by the new Upper School building, with space for collaboration and community defining the halls we inhabit. Groups like Riley’s Way and Tastes Of Home have launched a recent charge in combating food insecurity, bringing the core value of compassion to light in a newly tangible manner.
